What do you prefer - musical progression or the status quo (Status Quo)?

ThirstyDog [Edit] [Delete] 04:52, 26 November '12

By which I mean, do you like your favourite artists to keep moving forward, changing style & making each album sound different to the last, or do you prefer them to stick with what they're good at?

Seems bands are damned if they do, damned if they don't - most artists who keep churning out the same old stuff get critically slated for it, while those who make giant steps forward often alienate significant chunks of their fanbase in the process.

Scott Walker once complained that people keep telling him he should go back to his early 70s material, & correctly observed that if people want to hear him doing that kind of stuff they can simply listen to Scott I-IV; whereas if AC/DC released a country or techno album I am sure ridicule would ensue.

Thoughts?
