UK approach to music vs. America/Canada

This blog post reminded me of an interesting question I had over the weekend.

Who are the UK equivalent of bands like Grizzly Bear/Owen Pallett/Nico Muhly?

The blog suggests that UK critics generally thought artists like Pallett and Muhly are too clever for their own good. Is this why we've ended up with an industry in the UK that is too focused on first album results and immediate satisfaction, rather than artists who want to push the boundaries and challenge themselves and the listeners?
