noah & the whale - blue skies

the_outdoor_typo [Edit] [Delete] 12:38, 9 August '09

heard this for the first time yesterday and again this morning, and it's the best thing of theirs i've ever heard, the first that properly connects, although i've seem then a couple of times in the past couple of years and liked them enough.

but this song is great. re subject matter it's the counterweight to pulp's 'something changed' - one of the first few lines is something like "this is the last song i'll ever write while i'm still in love with you". it has gravitas and hope and acknowledges deep sadness and it's able to recognise human myopia on the part of the singer while not ridiculing it and pull back and see the bigger picture and appreciate that there will be a new perspective, some day, the blue skies of the title.

probably playing into the effect it's having on me are the facts that it's exactly what i need to hear at the moment, and also it's the most yer man's ever sounded like bill callaghan. but still. n&tw fans - is this actually the best thing they've ever done? what's better? if this is what's touching me of theirs, what else do i need to go and re-evaluate? has anyone heard the new record?
