90's Music History

alley [Edit] [Delete] 05:27, 23 July '09

If you had to teach a segment of what is basically a music history course on the 90's, what/who would you include? Keeping in mind that you would primarily have to give a very abridged but comprehensive overview, without letting your own taste overwhelm. (Although go into more niche suggestions also, if you like; might as well. A bonus of having a variety of people with various knowledge of music answering this question.) I was thinking it would probably be fairly rock-centric overall, but hip hop should likely be included, especially as our course didn't really cover its birth in the 80's. But who exactly would be featured? As far as rock goes, what beyond grunge and guitar rock was important/specific to the era? What were the social causes of different movements? What were their social implications, if any? What previous movements did they derive from/build on? Do I have to include boy bands?
