purchasing hifi equipment: your assistance, please

A few year ago when I worked in an electrical retailers, I might have known what I was talking about but not any more...

Basically I'm after some good quality (but not hideously expensive) separates through which I'd like to listen to A. my MP3 collection via PC (I have an old SoundBlaster live card which I might upgrade), B. CDs and, eventually, C. Vinyl.

So any suggestions for:

1. An amp
2. Some good floorstanding speakers
3. A CD deck
4. The best way of connecting all this up

Thanks in advance, with headphones a few months ago I got a lot of good advice. Approximate budget would be between £250 and £500, for something exceptional... is that realistic?
