Festive Fifty - what did/would/will you vote for?

thommo [Edit] [Delete] 22:17, 24 November '04
There's still time...http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/alt

My three were as follows:

1. X-Booty - O Superman

if i had to have only one vote this would grab it by the ribcage. i remember having to do an aural double-take when Peelie played this, it's just so utterly exhilarating. Simple enough idea: producer person takes arty experimental New Yoiker Laurie Anderson's superlative and mostly accapella 70s hit 'O Superman' and sticks it over thunderous, unrelenting Underworld-style techno beats. Scrape jaw off floor. Dance wide-eyed. Play again.

2. Marble Sheep - Fla Fla Heaven

Despite being 8 minutes long and being comprised of two riffs and the title as verse/chorus, 'Fla Fla Heaven' provokes a wide-as-the-sky grin to match the sound. Who said you can't be climactic without going anywhere? Glorius psych-dance-pop, plus Peel played it twice as far as i can remember.

3. Hyper Kinako - Don't Delete My Frog

s'been a good year for Purr on release quality alone - Hot Puppies, that slightly creepy/innocent song about school uniform, and the first 7"er from the Kinako. Granted i fell in love with this during the previous year's Peel session, but it was released proper this year so i guess it counts. It's frantic "toy-core", and includes one of the few times when the bit of a record without instruments in it has lodged itself in the consciousness (in cute Japanese voice: "What's in the box? Frog! Froggy frog!") Let's hope somebody lets them release an album with stuff as gleeful as this.
