It’s sad to think that so few people have clicked into the sheer beauty of Stickboy’s music, but with a little luck and good judgement on the part of discerning listeners, his debut album will spread his joyful sound far and wide.

Stickboy doesn’t write songs, he creates sweet droplets of tender emotion wrapped in layers of beautiful melody, and his eponymous debut is smothered in them.

His is a call from the region which brought forth the gentler moments of Badly Drawn Boy or the sweeter sounds of Mojave 3. String-laden simplicities are augmented with touches of sweet xylophone, slow rhythms saunter through sleepy vocals, and passion pokes out of heart-shaped holes in his lyrics.

Understandably cheap on the production, the sound does occasionally lack clarity but when it all comes together, like on the precious twirl and driven acoustica of The Riots, the shimmering ethereal nature of The Hurt or the simply beautiful power of Today, the shortcomings of the studio equipment slip away.

Is he just another cog in the wheels of Mancunian singer-songwriters or has he something more? The future will tell, but on the promise of this debut, he should be the next in line to follow Damon, Stephen, Liam and the rest into our hearts.
