SHAPES (Big Scary Monsters)

Some bands struggle for ideas. Some bands just straight up copy others. Some bands lack conviction and some bands should never have bothered in the first place. Thankfully Birmingham's latest and loudest three-piece SHAPES fall into a completely separate category, one marked 'Some bands will make you fill your pants with excitement'.

The noisy Brummies have honed their sound to dramatically tight effect taking influences from These Arms Are Snakes, The Mars Volta and dearly departed former label mates Meet Me In St Louis and have managed to create a record so fresh yet intricately elaborate with what feels like a hell-bent passion for making music. 'The Pasture, The Oil’ is the follow-up to 2008's debut self-released EP ‘Get Yer Learn On’ which showed signs of masterful musicianship and brilliant song-writing well exceeding their short lifespan. It's no wonder this lead to them being picked up by Big Scary Monsters, the UK’s reference point for challenging new music.

BRONTIDE (Holy Roar records)
http://www.myspace.com/brontidetheband

Forming from the ashes of 'synth-cab-for-cuties' I Was A Cub Scout and Brighton drama-punks Pictures - Brontide are an altogether different musical beast. Drawing upon the influence of Battles, Russian Circles and Don Caballero, Brontide are a riff-heavy, intelligent instrumental rock band that possesses an almost limitless scope.

ALRIGHT THE CAPTAIN

"Alright The Captain are an instrumental band. And round here, you know what being an instrumental bands means - intricate intertwining math-y guitar lines, punishing drumming, the odd lapse into sludge metal riffage. Well...yes, all that, but there's something in the way they do it which includes more than just knowing their way round post-rock dynamics, with knowledge of surf, post-hardcore and glitch all coming to the fore." - Sweeping the Nation

THESE WAVES

Alt pop 5 piece from Derby, sound like The Futureheads,At The Drive In & Biffy Clyro, always goes down smooth!
