ACOUSTIC LADYLAND

It can't be very often that bands with influences of Coltrane, Hendrix, Willie Dixon, Morphine, Napalm Death, Pig Destroyer, and James Chance & The Contortions end up with gushingly adoring reviews from such opposite ends of the spectrum as The Sun ("The most refreshingly original album of the year"), Drowned In Sound ("this is not some limp, slack, artsy-fartsy workout... it snaps rules and is as hard as nails") and All About Jazz ("one of the most thrilling bands on the planet"). It's then even less likely that such praise is justified... but not so with Acoustic Ladyland! Enthusiastically adventuring amongst sensitive and mesmeric free jazz, kneading their knuckles into a spacey and understated dough which is baked in a series of seamless rapid-fire explosions of raucous instrumental exuberance, avant-garde new/no wave post punk and, indefinably but unmistakably, joyous hope and over-riding optimism! Just as Acoustic Ladyland throw out the rule books, it's probably best for you to forget about all these words, and forget about listening, assessing and appreciating; it's far more elemental than that, so stand up and enjoy the ride!

Acoustic Ladyland is largely the doings of saxophonist and ex-Leeds resident, Mr Pete Wareham (Polar Bear, Fulborn Teversham, F:IRE Collective, and former Young Jazz Musician Of The Year, etc), though it would be pretty daft to write off the rest of his genuinely exciting, and bafflingly wonderful ensemble: Seb Rochford on drums (of Mercury Prize nominated Polar Bear, Fulborn Teversham, F-IRE Collective, guest of Yoko Ono at the John Lennon memorial concert, etc), Tom Herbert on bass (Jade Fox, F-IRE Collective), and new recruit Chris Sharkey on guitar (Leeds Improvised Music Association, Trio-VD, The Geordie Approach, Bilbao Syndrome, The Final Terror, etc).

The collective are also a coverted winner of the "BBC JAZZ AWARD BEST BAND".......

QUACK QUACK

On the surface, Leeds favourite trio Quack Quack seem to exist in some animated part-prog, part-post-rock indie hinterland, but closer inspection reveals a tight-knit instrumental trio who, in absorbing and acknowledging everything from dub, jazz, funk, and electronic music, subvert all tidy enclosures of prog-this or post-that.

Keyboardist/drummer Richard Morris (also of Two Minute Noodles and Chops), bass player Stuart Bannister, and veteran drummer Neil Turpin (also of Bilge Pump) are the core unit of players/engineers whose music - typified by chirpy synth, droning rumbles of bass and a keen sense of groove -- explores dynamics and refined interplay with a ceaseless, sprightly invention. Always respectful to the core elements of rhythm and sound while investing the whole instrumental shebang with a rare sense of fun.

TWO MINUTE NOODLES

Eceptively simple in their make up (two people, one organ, one synth, one drum kit), Two Minute Noodles produce huge swathes of euphoric noise, constantly building rhythms and incredibly passionate playing.
Moz and Goose make a krautpop noise in the style of AAVIKKO or maybe even ZOMBIE ZOMBIE. Featuring Mozzotron of Quack Quack (a busy night for the Moz machine!)
They’re so much fun live it’s almost obscene.
