Tonight in Edinburgh - State Broadcasters, Benni Hemm Hemm & Jo Foster

padredelmar [Edit] [Delete] 10:44, 12 April '09

If anyone's in Edinburgh and at a loose end tonight, there's some nice folk playing in the Bowery.

or if you can't be arsed clicking on a link, copied and pasted below.

It'll be better than whatever shit is on the telly.

State Broadcasters just released their debut album, the Ship and the Iceberg, on Electric Honey records. Frankly, it's gorgeous - wrestling gentle indie pop from a diverse collection of instruments (expect cello, harp, trombone, piano, double bass and maybe even a foot bell or two). This is their long over-due Edinburgh debut (the closest they've come was a show in Leith towards the end of last year). It should be lovely.

Benni Hemm Hemm's keen ear for melody and soothing tones hide complex songs structures and intricate rhythm patterns. In his native Iceland he performs with an ensemble brass band, and in the past has had collaborations with a chamber orchestra, and also with Jens Lakeman. This will see him in rare solo mode - but with his extensive back-catalogue of material to draw from (matched only by his incredible array of jumpers) - it should be something rather special.

Fence favorite Jo Foster doesn't play in Edinburgh often enough. Having performed with Withered Hand and Viking Moses in the past, it's great to have her own material take centre stage. Her gentle folk songs bound along with incredible energy.

There might also be eggs.
