Iain Archer will be peforming an intimate set @ Bush Hall TONIGHT(1st of April). He's celebrating the release of his new album 'To The Pine Roots' which came out on Black Records on the 23rd of March, conceived and recorded in a cottage by the Black Forest and imbued with the voices and performances of friends and family. What a delight the WOW festival has brought on to us this year. My excitement was justified due to the buzz for the many great films featured. Wow!

This year had a Cuban theme running throughout the festival listings as to celebrate 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution. CUUUUUUUUUBA.

At the heart of the festival was a certain climate change film (Age Of Stupid)(pictured above) touted to spread the word, open people eyes and expand their minds about the problem.

Last years WOW 2008 was quite successful with holding 182 screenings and over 7000 people gazing upon 22 cinemas throughout the UK.
This years gathering of world films looks auspiciously varied. All things considered, I would say this is a successful local film festival for Cardiff. I just wish that more people were aware of what’s on offer with this kind of event. The rule of thumb for this type of cinematic festival is excess: watch as many films you like the look of, take risks and go with an open mind. Heck, you may uncover a few filmic gems in the process.

Films that fluttered their eyelashes at me this time around were the bright, light and cheery Viva Cuba for a breezy adventure. The dark, docile O’Horten for its subtle comedic touches, that raised an eyebrow. Director Bent Hamer has his trademark storyline that consists of getting screwed over by jobs or following set career paths that fade into nothingness (Factotum feat. Matt Dillon).

Vying for the crown of best dinosaur related name with Dinosaur Pile Up are North London indie pop 8 piece Brontosaurus Chorus. There’s been a lot of talk of a Twee/C86 revival on GIITTV of late Brontosaurus Chorus’ mini album ‘You’ve Created a Monster’ takes the twee template and infuses it with a melodic bite: from the bubblegum boy/girl pop vocals, to the multi instrumentation (accordion, violin, synths, brass, bells), chunky riffing, and insatiable rhythms: it depicts a band having fun, eschewing the lines between an acts like Bearsuit, The B52s and Los Campesinos! Whilst there’s a touch of Britpop about Bronto’s life affirming vocals (supplied by Jodie Lowther and Matthew Curtis) that joust with joyful brass and strings: adding an abundance of wistfulness and romance to their sonic palette as they put it ‘we’ve got no faith in the future only in ourselves’.
