High Places Live!

rowanthrilljockey [Edit] [Delete] 13:57, 5 November '08

Pushing the frontiers of avant-pop" (FACT)
"It's mesmerising stuff" (NME)
"Beautiful and absorbing" (The Line of Best Fit)
"Subtly escalating music towards new territories" (Rock-a-Rolla)

Since Rob Barber and Mary Pearson emerged from a burgeoning Brooklyn scene earlier this year with their singles collection '03/07 - 09/07' (Out on Thrill Jockey), they have never looked back, becoming one of 2008's underground success stories, along with others, such as their some time touring partners No Age and Deerhunter.

Their signature sound is rich with layers of lilting, reverb-laden vocals, syncopated, semi-tribal percussion and heavily treated found sounds. This 'fairytale dancehall' or 'underwater tropicana' as it has been described, has enchanted critics and fans alike, with consistently high praise from magazine such as Plan B, FACT, The Wire, The Independent, NME, Rock-a-Rolla, Music Week, Flux and Uncut and radio plays on BBC 6music and XFM. They have also recently been selected as one of the bands to feature in a piece on the new Brooklyn scene in Uncut.

In a live setting the multi-textured rhythms and playful melodies of their forward thinking dream-pop, are lifted to new heights. Rob handles the drums, triggering a variety of of percussive sounds with his drum pads, as well as playing hand percussion, wooden blocks with contact mics and singing some ambient vocals. Mary sings and simultaneously manipulates her vocals with various delay and reverb pedals, whilst playing some hand percussion, recorders and creating and controlling some loops.

This is a magical live show that's not to be missed, but don't take my word for it. So you can see and hear for yourself they will be doing a lovely tour...
