THE NEW YEAR
The New Year was formed in 1999 by brothers Bubba and Matt Kadane as a continuation of their songwriting partnership in the acclaimed band Bedhead who came out of Austin, Texas in the early nineties. The New Year was not just a new name, but also new personnel (Chris Brokaw of Come and Codeine on the drums together with Peter Schmidt on guitar and Mike Donofrio on bass) and a new label (legendary Chicago label Touch & Go).
The New Year's sound is one of quiet power. Whilst you may well find their 3 albums (all recorded with Steve Albini) filed under 'Indie Rock' in your local record store, their music has far more intelligence and intricacy than that oft-used tag may imply. They weave their 3 electric guitars together to create a rich and beautiful framework for the songs that has a grace and an airy, unhurried quality that feels like the aural equivalent of drops of cool water hitting the ground. The term 'like a breath of fresh air' is used often to describe the latest big thing, or new sound, but never has it been more appropriate than in description of the music this band makes. The brothers' lyrical concerns and vocal delivery detail reflective (and sometimes resigned) takes on presumably personal narratives but they never rely on cool detachment or inward soul-searching of the more overwrought kind. Their live performances are exercises in restraint and (dare we say it?) taste, as their power comes from the sheer strength of their songwriting and doesn't need any further dressing. They played early afternoon, first band on, at 2006's Touch & Go 25th Anniversary Festival in Chicago, in a car park under an overcast sky and barely moved onstage (let alone 'rocked out' in the traditional sense of the word) but they were the undisputed highlight of the day. They're a truly unique and wonderful band and we're very excited to bring them to Nottingham for the first time.

CHRIS BROKAW
We've been fortunate to play host to Chris on several occasions in the past in Nottingham and tonight sees him playing twice in one night, first as a solo artist and then in his role as drummer for The New Year. Chris' resume reads like a rock history book. He's most well known for his role as guitarist and songwriter in Boston-based band Come and (prior to that) his drumming role in Codeine.
Since then he's played with Lemonhead Evan Dando, been a part of Pullman, Consonant, The Willard Grant Conspiracy (among others) and played with Rhys Chatham and Tara Jane O'Neil (again, among others). He even drummed in the 7/7/07 77 Boadrum event by The Boredoms. He is also currently bringing the rock on guitar for The Thurston Moore Band and his new project Fflashlights with Tortoise's Doug McCombs.
His solo music moves between finely crafted and lyrically wry songwriting and some of the most imaginative solo guitar music committed to tape. As anyone who has been present at his past Nottingham gigs can testify, he really is that good. He also has a new-found interest in extreme black metal and is a shit-hot dancer. He might play the song 'La Playa' if enough people ask him to.

Not only is this evening the first time The New Year have been to Nottingham, it's also the first time Damn You! has promoted a gig at the Rescue Rooms venue. We felt a venue with a big stage and crystal clear PA would be the best way to present this gig and we hope you'll support us in what is a new venture for our collective. You can still buy tickets from us and from the usual outlets and the gig will be running at normal times, we expect doors to be around 8 and the curfew is 11.30.
