Bands are behind every scene. They gather us together, inspire our fashion and provide the soundtrack. Paul McCallum and Ross Ferguson collaborate here to document some of the finest cult musical talent. These are the bands who brought their unique sounds and styles up from the underground and carved new niches. Featuring alongside them are those next contenders vying to take their place. Coming from rival schools of digital (Ross) and SLR (Paul) photography, these pictures are some of their most recognisable work from album artwork, promotional material and the music press.
Paul McCallum:
Having quit university in summer 2001, armed with a brand new 35mm camera, Paul embarked on tour for the best part of the year with his friend’s band Biffy Clyro. Quickly he realised he had found his calling and suddenly found himself taking a number of live band shots. His first break came in 2002 when Biffy Clyro asked him to take the shots for their first album “Blackened Sky”. What followed was a plethora of small unpaid jobs, mainly for friends’ bands of the likes of Aereogramme and Eska, as well as the continued touring with Biffy Clyro. An unplanned detour into film making took place in 2003 when he shot and directed 2 music videos; one for Aereogramme’s single “Post Tour Pre-Judgment” and Biffy Clyro’s “Toys, toys, toys, choke, toys toys, toys”. After moving to London towards the end of that year, he was fortunate enough to do a number of shows for Fender Guitars. These shows included: Oceansize, The Cooper Temple Clause and H.I.M. He managed to keep things ticking over whilst taking shots for “A Badge of Friendship” - a music website, which he and his girlfriend Claire set up together. Through the website, he has also had the good fortune to take shots of Jane’s Addiction, Charlottefield and I’m Being Good. This exhibition gives him the opportunity to share some of the bands he has documented. Bands that excite him, and hopefully this will excite you too.

Ross Ferguson:
Ross has been taking photos of bands for a number of years now, these include Glasgow-based Pupkin as well as London bands The Bishops, The Vincents and The Ramps. Ross’ work is London-based but his work with technology gets him into all kinds of trouble around the world. His trusty digital camera is always on hand to capture the action.
