Friday GIG in South London

rickc [Edit] [Delete] 12:20, 5 June '08

Friday 6th June at the Cavendish Arms - a three-way triple headed triangular hatrick of:

Arthur Brick is a five-man outfit of four years standing. The Brick concentrates on making rhythms to move to, overlayed with charango, lap steel and electronic oddness. Arthur Brick has been described as “a holy matrimony of wild jig and skiffle, out of which a rare and weirdly wonderful talent twists the everyday into tales of strange wonderment.” Be that as it may, the Arthur Brick still loves a pint and a ponder in a pub with a good jukebox and some lovely brown on tap. The stories that make up the songs are best swapped in places where old men cackle and brood in peculiar vests.

Debut album “Brown” released on 19th June – see Arthur Brick myspace page for more details!

deXter Bentley is a performer, with blues and folk the closest reference points musically - though sung with a distinct English twang. With a rather casual attitude towards what is fashionable, their lyrics are compelling analyses of everyday tragedies like filling out your tax return, being stuck in a stale relationship or taking a girl who hogs the candy floss to the beach. Their debut album "In Order Alphabetical" is a great big selection box of lovely treats - at one extreme there is the pared-down rhythmic chant of "Cry Now", with its thrilling, booming group vocal lines, and at the other there is "Fishtank", a gorgeous drone track that sounds like an acoustic My Bloody Valentine. In between there are all the harmoniums, kazoos, toy accordions and agitated Scottish poets that one could wish for.

Knots We Tie have been described as a sweet, soulful and utterly satisfying affair that could banish even the boldest of ghouls. Arcade Fire playing found instruments in an attic. 'Nipping at Fanfarlo's heels in the 'most beautiful London folk-act' stakes' (Club Ugly).
