DAVID THOMAS BROUGHTON (UK)
Broughton’s ‘The Complete Guide to Insufficieny’ is comparable to such forebears as John Fahey and Nick Drake, as well as contemporaries Antony and the Johnsons and Neutral Milk Hotel, but even these comparisons don’t fully convey the scope and beauty of Broughton’s sound.

Using simple tools- an acoustic guitar, some looping pedals, a cheap drum machine - Broughton has created a singular statement of purpose and artistic intent. A true master of the loop machine Broughton manages to create the effect of a band and choir on stage simultaneously. Long after “freak-folk” is no longer a trend, listeners will still be pulling The Complete Guide to Insufficiency off the shelf.

SUZY MANGION (MANCHESTER)

Starting from a cupboard with a piano & a drumkit in it, Durham City, England, Suzy began her public music-making as one half (with Michael Varty) of school boy-girl band George in 1994. George released a number of acclaimed secret pop records on vinyl collector labels Earworm & Bad Jazz in the late 90s, and eventually released their debut album The Magic Lantern on Pickled Egg records in 2003. An EP, All Good Things, was released in Spain on Lejos Discos, and the 2005 George album A Week of Kindness was released on both labels.

Suzy is one half of gentle duo THE WINTER JOURNEY, and a member of Spanish electronica act ARBOL. She also collaborated with Piano Magic on their album Writers Without Homes (4AD), and on the Big Eyes Family Players's Do The Musiking (Pickled Egg Records).

"Suzy Mangion's pure voice cuts through the muggy layer of postmodernism to deliver songs that beautifully capture a sense of perpetual loss through the passing of time itself." The Wire

DEAN MCPHEE (LANCASTER)
A recent support to Meg Baird of Espers down in the Big Smoke, Lancaster based Dean McPhee takes diverse influence from elements of psych folk, post rock, african and morrocan trance music to produce dreamy guitar soundscapes reminiscent of perhaps Robby Krieger of The Doors in laid back psychedelic mode. His set tonight includes new material and guest musicians. Dean also has a 7" out in July on world in winter recordings with the band Chapters.

JO GILLOT (LANCASTER)
Hailing from London but based in Lancaster Jo is a new discovery for LAWM. A little reminiscent of the likes of Polly Paulusma in her sound, well worth checking out.
