Cagedbaby

16 Lovers

Label: Southern Fried Release Date: 23/05/2005

holliy by holliy May 23rd, 2005

Long ago in a far off land, Disco was seen as corrupt and degenerate; a black hole into which innocent youth were sucked. The bump-and-grind blandishments of the drum machine and dizzying sparkle of the mirrorball were decried as being responsible for the decline in moral standards in our society… and so on. These days, however, 'disco' is more likely to bring to mind ridiculous clothes and frankly terrifying haircuts than it is to evoke thoughts of degenerate behaviour. It’s amiable enough, good fun in its way, but ultimately something of a joke.

Tom Gandley, AKA Cagedbaby, AKA the genetic wild card in a family of classical pianists and fishmongers, is on a one man mission to change this. '16 Lovers', taken from forthcoming debut album 'Cagedbaby Will See You Now', is an irredeemably filthy slice of disco-funk-grind-electro. With grinding beats and breathy vocals, slippery synths and plenty of Huh!s, it ain’t subtle – well, of course not: it wouldn’t be disco if it were – but it neatly skirts the edges of ridicule to touch base in the 'shamelessly compulsive fuckmusic' section of your local record store. Disco (albeit in mutated, futuristic, dance-music-referencing form) may, if Mr Cagedbaby has any say in it, be due a revival of its Scourge Of Society status. Amen to that…
