Avril Lavigne

Happy Ending

Label: Arista Release Date: 02/08/2004

6412
mannot by Michaela Annot July 28th, 2004

The news a few months ago that ex-Evanescence axe-man Ben Moody was hooking up with Avril Lavigne was enough to send shivers down the spine of even the most besotted sk8er bois.

Goodbye pop thrills! Hello angry damsel! Even though Mr Moody (what an apt name) isn’t involved in this particular track, the shadow of overblown whinge-pop looms large. ‘Happy Ending’ is an Alanis Morissette tune in all but name. It’s nowhere near as good as Avril’s uber-ballad ‘I’m With You’ from her last album, and it’s the sort of gritted teeth ‘everything’s-rubbish-now-cos-you’re-gone-you-bastard’ pap that gives us girls a bad name and makes us all look like a bunch of depressive bunny boilers.

But at the same time, it’s really quite catchy, impressively pompous and enjoyably over-stated. How confusing.
