Pure Reason Revolution

Apprentice Of The Universe

Label: Poptones Release Date: 19/04/2004

5927
Mike_Diver by Mike Diver April 22nd, 2004

With a title like that, what were you expecting? Tight-trousered garage rock? Faux-angst-riddled kiddie hardcore? Thought not – Pure Reason Revolution are pure prog’ rock, albeit updated for the more discerning Noughties listener. Vocal harmonies straight out of The Beach Boys’ back catalogue are latched onto some of the most gloriously self-indulgent musicianship heard since Yes hung up their capes (only to dig them out again). Indeed, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if at least one member of this Reading five-piece owned some Rick Wakeman-style clobber. But pretentious? Nah, this _is_ perfect pop music, only not quite as we know it.
