JAY-Z

Excuse Me Miss

Label: Roc-a-Fella Records Release Date: 14/04/2003

smckeating by Scott McKeating April 14th, 2003

There's quite a strong 80's vibe here, attempting to summon up a kind of low-rent, futuristic funky Prince feel. Nice idea, but this is pretty grooveless; I'd probably even go so far as to call it as flat as a fart, despite the fact that it's a Neptunes collaboration. Yes, surprise surprise, it's the Neptunes again.

The song brings to mind white plastic; the image of the inside of a fridge repeatedly appears in my brain. I'm pretty sure that they weren't going for a sterile, mono, synthetic and featureless feel in the studio, but they did it anyway. Jay spouts some pretty (yawn...) run-of-the-mill rhymes and his chorus hook is another example of him biting the lyrics and flow of Notorious B.I.G., and, somewhat less predictably this time, the mighty Luther Vandross.

Skip this single and get the in yer face remix from 'Blueprint 2.1' instead. This is safe enough for daytime radio, but not good enough for anything else. Bad.
