Therapy?

Gimme Back My Brain

Label: Release Date: 06/08/2001

rubbafish by Colin Weston July 22nd, 2001

OK, only way to review a bands progression after 3 years is to listen to their back catalouge. With Irish rockers Therapy?, this is a pleasure. Songs such as 'Potato Junkie' & 'Screamager' haven't aged at all since their original releases back in the early-mid 90's.

One thing that has happened though is that since the band released the amazing 'Troublegum', the bands rock edge has become much more focused, polished, commercial if you like and when that happens, obviously the rawness of a band gives way.

With their new single, their is a new style and the rawness returns... and with abundance. From the opening strains of the title track, you think of bands like Backyard Babies & Hellacoptors with their old school rock sound. Think of songs like the Babies 'Babylon' and you are on the right track... Therapy? style sleaze rock... oh yes!

As for the numerous number of covers on the different releases, they don't offer much new (to see the full list, click here). Although good covers in their own right, they don't Therapy-ify the songs with the exception of 'Gimme (A Man After Midnight)' which makes you think of the TV show rather then a certain foursome from Sweden.

All in all, it is a welcome return by the band and has me hotly anticipating their next album. I am sure all Therapy? fans will love it but, sadly, I can't see it going much out of the confines of those priveliged few.
