Delta Saint

Demo

Label: Release Date: 10/06/2003

athomas by Andy (quirk) Thomas June 11th, 2003

Manchester trio, Delta Saint, make much of the fact they supported the abominable Katastrophe Wife at a London Ladyfest event earlier this year. Thankfully just a few seconds into this CD it becomes apparent that this female fronted gang are quite some way from the atonal leanings of Bjelland's group. Opening track, 'Ode To The Bandit', suggests a keen appreciation of both Ash and Lush despite citing neither in their list of influences. A poppy number with the cheery abandon of that careless summer holiday between college and university.

The second track is a mercifully brief instrumental jaunt with a stuttering one string solo. Thankfully things pick up again on track three, 'Did The Devil Take Your Soul', with lo-fi vocal harmonies riding a thoroughly pop chorus and a drummer who appears to be playing three pans and a paper bag. The only problem is the return of the dreaded one string guitar noodle, running all over the place like a randy dog surrounded by a crowd of potential legs.

Delta Saint certainly have the knack for writing cheery lo-fi pop in a similar vein to the aforementioned Lush, and to a lesser extent teenage wannabes Vyvyan. However, much like Ash the trio need to recognise their strength is in their pop rather than their punk. Come on, who really preferred 'Numbskull' to 'Burn Baby Burn'?
