Eventide

3 track demo EP

Label:

mclarke by Michael Clarke November 13th, 2001

Eventide are barely 12 months old, they hail from the non-rock'n'roll town of Plymouth and recorded this 3 track demo in bassist Tim's student house. It doesn't show. Here are 3 perfectly crafted songs which possess as much emotion, and more, than Travis' back catalogue, and whilst this country isn't in any shortage of modern acoustica, Eventide manage to maintain a destinctive and almost experimental sound.

The opening track, the aptly-titled 'Reverse New York' is a tender multi-layered song, and what's most evident about the band, on this track, is their will to experiment with sound (despite standing themselves in famously the least diverse genre there is), and as a result turn a simple melodic tune into a grand epic song. The vocals, as they are on the second track also, are perhaps the dominating force of the sound. Distorted and distant, they give Eventide the edge that so many far bigger bands lack.

'Slumber', a heart-breaking, melodic composition, is where the bands major strength lies. Driven by the slow piano intro, which is perfectly hamonised with the again soaring vocals of Paul Giles. As simple a tune as you'll find, but masterminded and performed to great effect. The final song 'Add/Invite' is more of the same with equal results. "All you people gather round" we're told. Indeed you should, cos this is a band who'll go from strength-to-strngth, and promise a great deal for the future, and you don't wanna miss out hearing them. Believe me.
