Urban Militia

Demo #2

Label: Release Date: 23/05/2001

sean by Sean Adams May 23rd, 2001

Tricky! Portishead! Massive Attack! Roni Size! Bristol is briiiiiiiilllaaaannnnntttt!!!! Sorry, just had to get that out of my system because I’ve just put this into my system for the umpteenth time. This is URBAN MILITIA a band who could easily be a combo of the first four bands, but they’re not. You could maybe call them kindred souls of their cities contemporaries. But I won’t because to compare is to degrade or some such pretentiousness...

There is a heart monitor in the middle of this. 'Code F' is the song in the middle of this. I’ll let a verse take you to the heart of this band “You put up your barriers, to hide from the truth. Don’t believe in expression only of your opression. Your control is not my control, let me take my heart and soul” that says it for me, but I’m sure it doesn’t for you. When ’Code F’ starts, you wonder what the strange sample is because it sounds like a Dalek from Doctor Who fighting with an electric door. The heart monitor holds together the beats, the lyrical flows, the femme-mystique-vocals. This is breakbeat and this is what Bristol is world famous for!

’21st Century Culture’ is a heartfelt dropkick at life after the Thatcher Apocalypse. This song spits into the future with a feeling that there is something there to leap forward to. This does sound a little like The Prodigy but it has a huge soundscope that anarchy cannot see. The different dimensions and drifting speeds make this structure defy the sense of urgent anger that it seems to have on first listen. This song makes me want to lay back and close your eyes to absorb every ounce of it.

Need I say more? Well, there is one more song to mention ‘See you’ which features all the elements above, plus, you’ll never believe it, but a build up into a chugging guitar. Yes way!

As you can tell, I like this band a lot, so much so they’re playing the Drownedinsound fest Fighting Gravity on Friday June 29th.
