Calla

Televise

Label: Arena Rock Recording Company Release Date: 20/01/2003

3208
afrankowski by Andy Frankowski January 30th, 2003

Calla are a band cloaked in gloomy dark arrangements, yet are found dangling over gorgeous ground. This CD by the Brooklyn-by-way-of-Texas trio simultaneously breathes the air of regret and redemption and takes you to where sadness becomes beauty and the misunderstood are finally understood.

’Televise’_ creates a mood that sucks you in and brings your pain with you. Throughout, sounds sputter in and out like flickering lights and droning guitars crash like breaking hearts. ’Televise’ seems to be lost somewhere between the quiet and the loud, as gently plucked guitars make way for intense montages of fuzzed-out remorse, the sound of Aurelio Valle unleashing anger on his guitar to combat the pain.

Calla is the ghost sitting besides you as the memories you though you’d forgotten re-emerge and dance in your head. It’s the joy of recalling that lost love for the second before remembering the pain you caused. ”I’ll hold my breath for you instead but don’t count it.” Valle sings ”All I know is I thought I saw you crawl back for more.”

'Televise’ feels like wandering through an abandoned building. Each song is a distressed journey from one empty, lonely room to another. It’s solemn and mesmerizing, you fear being locked in, yet it exudes a safety and warmth once you're there. Calla show you the purity of all the sadness in the world and that happiness is there, and then urge you to grab it before it slips away.

”If I could tell you I would / If I could hold you I would”
