10 ways to follow their hearts
10 ways to follow their hearts
sean by Sean Adams September 2nd, 2001
Boy meets girl. Boy meets world. Then there was confusion. Then a band strolled onto the main stage of Reading on the day of pu/nu-metal. The band were Boy Hits Car. They may not of been Papa Roach or the sub-level of them in the form of Alien Ant Farm, complete with the kidz trying to look like their in a music video. But they did give one of the only heart-felt pre-song speeches of the weekend, about how everyone should follow their hearts to fulful their dreams. They even sounded like they meant it, rather than others which were so over-rehearsed they didn't need to be written on a towel.

We managed to sneak 10minutes with the band I heard someone deem 'nu-hippy' via e-mail (we were limited to 10 questions by order of the label) just before the festival and this what they had to say...

1> If Boy Hits Car was morphed into a book, what would the overview say?
Follow the path of your heart.

2> Has it been a challenge to be taken seriously on a creative level with the bland 'pop-nu-metal' tag looming?
No, if anything it is the commercial aspects of this business that have been the challenge; certain radio stations in the States haven't played us. Creatively, though, we have been taken seriously and we are continuously garnering positive responses from our album and live shows from fans and critics alike. As far as the "pop-nu-metal" tag, I've never heard that, a lot of people search for the right tag to label us with and no one is really sure what to call us. Two different fans came up with the most creative comparisons so far: one told us "if Rage Against The Machine and the The Doors fucked you guys would be the baby." Another told us "You guys sound like Ravi Shankar on crack!" I don't know how accurate either is, but they're interesting.

3> What are your influences (both musical and non-musical)?
Too many musical influences from our early days to list (check out the video interview footage on our website: boyhitscar.com where we answer this in detail). These days all of our influences come from the joys and the heartbreaks of life. We listen to our hearts and we write and play straight from the heart.

4> What affects to you hope/think/know your music has on your fans?
We hope our music brings people together and inspries them to follow their heart.

5> Is there any one moment which defines you as Boy Hits Car?
No ONE moment. However, our songs and live shows represent a multitude of moments which define who we are as a band.

6> How do you feel about mosh pits?
Mosh pits can be a great arena to release pent-up aggressions and dance and express oneself. They can sometimes look beautiful. They can also become ugly when you see meanderthal meatheads using the mosh pit to inflict harm on others in order to make them feel better about their small brains and their small dicks.

7> If there was to be a world government and you were all put in charge, what two serious things would you do and what two silly things would you do?
I don't think any of us would ever want to be in charge of any govenment. We're not about the people, we ARE the people. But I'd like to have an optional naked day annually to celebrate the human body.

8> For anyone who has not heard boy hits car how would you describe your sound?
Lovecore.

9> Are you looking forward to reading?
Playing Reading is something we've dreamed of and imagined for years, we're quite looking forward to it.

10>Are there any bands you think our readers should check out?
Bands to check out: Fela Kuti rules. Also listen to Miles Davis, Johnny Cash, Woody Guthrie, Dead Kennedy's, Fugazi, Minor Threat...to name few. Oh yeah, listen to Ravi Shandar also...

We'll hopefully do a much more indepth face to face interview with Boy Hits Car in the near future when they return to our little island. In the meantime visit boyhitscar.com.
