One thing I like to do is find new music by new bands... most people do, right? Well, here is my new idea... I am gonna scan a few websites, check out a few bands, maybe just a single track by each, maybe 5 and then tell you about them. I am gonna do 5 bands a week or a month (unsure at the moment) from random sections and just tell you about them... and in no particular genre either. It could be hip-hop, jazz, gospel, death metal... who knows?
OK, this first week will be bands I have found over the past few years (or just this week) but from then on it will be random choices (hey, it is MY article, I can do as I like!)
First band up is Leeds based punkers The Jon Does. They are heavily influenced by the US punk scene that incorporates bands like NOFX & The Ataris, and you can hear it in the bands sound. The fact is, it finally looks like this country have produced a band who can compete with them. The track 'Major League' is the stand out one for me but to know that the UK has bands that can compete with the Vigrant, Kung Fu & Epataph labels and their rosters. Next up are American comedy band Raymond & Scum. If you like Weird Al or Adam Sandler, then these are for you. They show why Blink 182 are shit and NOT a comedy band... OK, so the band aren't that talented musically, but lyrically they are ace. Ripping off a certain Green Day song to make their own 'Time With Your Wife' is a prime example. There aren't many bands from Switzerland that make it... well, I can't think of any to be honest, but maybe times are to change? In a world where the 'alternative glam' generation are obsessed with bands like Rachel Stamp, the Swiss have come up with their own equivilant... Gutter Queens. They look like a band of Guy's (lead singer with The Toilet Boys) and their tunes aren't half bad either. For me however, glam was Marc Bolan & T-Rex, and that they are not... but if you are after a subtle blend of new glam with rock attitude, then you can't go far wrong with these. So, you thought the worst thing Canada had to offer was Bryan Adams... I have found competition. Mark Edward Hall looks like an ageing Chris De Burgh, which is never a good thing. Musically, he sounds like a bad imitation of Simon & Garfunkel... but no-one can be as good as they were (Mrs. Robinson was a classic). Lastly for now we go for a bit of jazz... acid jazz. Blue Cyberia have come straight outta San Diego to dish us their brand. Of the tracks I listened to, the one that stuck with me was 'Wild Blue Yonder' which sounds like a Japanese Manga track... and being a manga fan, thats a good thing by me. The artist covers all aspects from 'dreamy' up to 'Pink Floydian'... a nice ecclectic mix for all of those sick of guitars and want something new. Find out more and sample his goodness by going here.
