Munkster

Help Me Breathe

Label: Toast Records Release Date: 07/04/2003

chilliard by Chris Hilliard April 11th, 2003

Recalling the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ recent conversion to melody, Munkster possess an appalling moniker, which in no way reflects their music. Their songs are somewhat bereft of a jaw-dropping chorus or that little sprinkle of magic dust on the mixing desk that divides the songs that ruminate around your head for weeks on end from tunes which make you go “hmmm... yeah that was kinda okay”.

‘Help Me Breathe’, an ode to nasal decongestants perhaps, is a warm, sunny day of a song. Seb Wesson’s transatlantic drawl winds through the song in a unhurried fashion while the tune runs past amiably enough, paying cursory nods to The Police. Munkster make an in no way unpleasant, inoffensive noise, but something about them just fails to excite. A band’s first few singles should really stir some deeper emotion or feeling that that... some anger, passion, fear... instead of warm tea and crumpets.
