The Beautiful New Born Children

Hey People!

Label: Domino Records Release Date: 16/01/2006

11976
Mike_Diver by Mike Diver January 17th, 2006

Brief encounters are rarely so fleeting: at less than 25 minutes long, Hey People! (exclamation mark essential) is as brash and trashy an introduction to Domino’s latest (j)angular punk-rockers as anyone could’ve secretly hoped for. Nobody likes a band that outstays its welcome, and The Beautiful Newborn Children don’t stop long enough to even wipe their feet, let alone slip their tatty sneakers off and settle in for a cup of tea.

These nine tracks are as simplistic as such a running time should suggest: chop-chop go the knackered guitars through amplifiers in need of an overhaul; vocals are sneered in a suitably Iggy fashion; and lyrics are as gloriously dumb as early Oasis or breakthrough Nirvana. Hell, TBNBC’s singer goes so far as to openly steal from Cobain on album opener ‘Do The Do’: “Hey, hey, I got a new complaint.” Well, that’s what it sounds like, anyway – the recording is so shaky, so ramshackle, that you could conceivably miss a whole song for all the foggy fuzz here.

At it’s best, Hey People! dizzies like an In The Red band in full flow – ‘Hey Heartbreaker’ is electrifying in its frantic distress, and ‘I Do Too’ swaggers, cocky as you like, like Mick and Keef in their Summer of Love finery; at its worst it’s never dislikeable. There’s nay an original thought throughout its duration, but TBNBC’s debut is a well-executed exercise in precise mimicry that’ll have bodies out of seats with considerable ease. Considering the unnecessary dressing-up of many a newcomer to critical ears – art-this and intellect-that – such no-frills fun sounds fucking tremendous.

“I’m feeling good, I’m feeling fine, I’m okay, and I don’t really give a fuck about what you say,” they state as clear as day on ‘Ok, All Right, Fine’. Amen to that, brothers; now, close the door on your way out.
