Scuttle

Fireworks For Summer

Label: Firefly Recordings

DiSvsMatt by Mat Hocking November 21st, 2002

‘Fireworks For Summer’ *is, aside from being a rather ambiguous title, also the second EP from Brighton’s *Scuttle. Whereas their first effort kind of fell short in capturing a technical but melodic post-hardcore style, this recording has took hold of the potential lurking beneath and created a truly enjoyable disc of rocking polyphonic songwriting. ‘Think of Earthquakes’ _bounds into an intense hook that seems to have capitalised on the melody and drive that was attempted on ‘Testing The Strength of The Surface’_, vocalist Steve’s tuneful shouts really hammering home a powerful mix of melody and sweat-draining passion.

While ‘The Science of Distance & Travel’ _relishes in it’s own angularity, Steve screaming words of frustration that strike a familiar chord personally, tracks like the jerky ‘Make A Decision’ and the groovesome ‘Subject Matter Closed’ _are sure to get you head-nodding and shaking yourself around.

More direct and punchy than *Kids Near Water *and loaded with all manner of intricate rhythms and widdly bits ‘Fireworks…’ displays a stronger, more confident Scuttle and a band more than capable of coming up with the goods. To the front of the class please.
