McAlmont And Butler

Falling

Label: EMI Records Release Date: 29/07/2002

smills by Stephanie Mills July 29th, 2002

When I was in primary school my English teacher refused to let me use the word 'nice'. She said that it was the worst word in the English language, as it failed to offer any sort of description. She constantly made me scramble through my thesaurus looking for alternative, more descriptive words. I could describe this song as pleasant, or sweet, or delectable, or just plain lovely; but I think 'nice’ is the only fitting word to use.

It's summer and who else should provide us with such 'nice' strings and bells but Mr McAlmont and Mr Butler. Seven years since the gorgeous 'Yes' provided the soundtrack to our sun basking and nothing seems to have changed; and I mean that literally. 'Falling' sounds like the genetically produced offspring of _'Yes'. The same formula is there - a 'nice' catchy chorus, the 'nice' melodic vocals and the feint sound of Butler's guitar. In fact, the song is so 'nice' that my gran likes it.

The song feels as though McAlmont and Butler are trying too hard recreate their former glory. Everything is the same and the duo are sounding monotonous and dull. I'll admit the song is 'nice' but as my teacher always said 'nice' isn’t good enough.
