Matthew

Streams

Label: Rykodisc Release Date: 12/08/2002

gdobson by Gareth Dobson July 19th, 2002

Matthew are a 5-piece from the Windy City (that’s Chicago to you and me) who do a nice line in big slabs of guitar with pop hooks.

But doesn’t everybody else these days? ‘Streams’ comes on all thoughtful guitar with a nice slow-mo Foo Fighters riff. It’s impressive, but too mid-paced. I mean, by the time the songs ended, you’ve already counted your favourite Radiohead B-sides. Twice. Which comes in handy really, as second track ‘In Your Car’ sounds like it was modelled on an early Radiohead B-side. Thom Yorke had a thing about cars too, y’know.

It’s not different or attention grabbingly unique, but there’s enough hints of quality to make them worth checking out when they arrive in Blighty come August. Decision withheld.
