Queen Adreena

Pretty Like Drugs

Label: Rough Trade

-gen- by Gen Williams July 10th, 2002

'Pretty Like Drugs' is one of Queen Adreena's best singles to date. Their true strength lies in their live performance, where the full force of their fury hits you right between the eyes, and this song encapsulates that beautifully, abandoning the wispier side of their sound in favour of a full-on aural assault; it's evident that Queen Adreena are beginning to move away from their softer, faerie-ish image, and moving into much heavier, more ragged and unhinged territory. Which is no bad thing. Katie-Jane Garside's shredded vocals are by turns fragile and fearsome, flitting between breathless sighs and all-out roaring, and backed by a stomping, filthy glam-esque riff throughout. The sum effect is sexy, brilliant and brutal, and a delicious taster for the forthcoming album.
