Biblical Proof of UFOs

S/T

Label: Superfi Records Release Date: 29/04/2002

DiSvsMatt by Mat Hocking May 1st, 2002

Does anyone remember the instrumental stoner rock band Karma to Burn? You know, the band that John Garcia sang in for about 2 weeks as a side project to *Kyuss *but left because his vocals were too “metally”? And when their next vocalist left they went ahead and released the album on Roadrunner anyway without the vox. Well, if you found yourself quite partial to a blast of them while smoking a coupla herbal cigarettes then Cleveland’s *Biblical Proof of UFOs *will help warm your bong up nicely.

Y’see they’re also a band with the audacious nature of playing sans _big beardy vocalist (although since the recording of this CD they’ve enlisted the help of a singer) and as such all you have to pay all your attention to is the music. Which, in my opinion is a shame really. Because bpUFOs have some talented instrumentation and wicked grooves going on that beg for a big bellowy vocalist along the lines of Neal Fallon (Clutch) to come and enhance their heavy rock riffage with a big beefy _“Yeeeeeeaaaaahh!”

But alas! It never comes and much like the look on Tony Wilson’s face when he realised the *Happy Monday’s *newly recorded album contained no vocals whatsoever you’re left with a disconcerted feeling that they could’ve sounded so much better with some canehead booming out some blues-rock roars.

That said, there is a consistent quality present with a variety of dynamics and time signatures that prevent you from being bored from just a guitar, bass and drums. ‘Axial Tilt is The Reason For The Season’ and *‘Sixteen and Three’ *hammer out some well-thought out blues-tinged riffs that recall elements of some of the genre’s highly regarded pioneers.

If stoner rock is your thing then, despite the lack of a vocalist, at least on this recording, bpUFOs’ dusty blend of laid back grooves provide a mean soundtrack to get you skinning. Click on the link to Superfi's website for some MP3s.
