The Sugars

Way To My Heart

Label: Bad Sneakers Release Date: 19/11/2007

29492
dionisio by Rob Webb November 21st, 2007

Bands who sound like they're from some bygone age that probably never even existed: a bad thing, right? Wrong. When it's sepia-tinged, 1950s inspired blues-pop brilliance like this cracker from girl-boy-girl trio The Sugars, we're all for it.

Like The White Stripes if they weren't so self-conscious and knew how to write hooks that skirted the edges of the indie charts rather than topped the pops, or The Kills if they gouged themselves on candy instead of Velvets-y smack fantasies, 'Way To My Heart' has that all-important dance factor to go with its air of effortless cool.

Jaunty bass, call-and-response chorus ("that's the way to my heart" - yes, yes it is) and the impression that this is a song - and band - wildly out of step with both their musical and geographic peers (they're from Leeds, for goodness sake) all add to the appeal.

On this evidence, then, The Sugars = sweet.
