The Xcerts

My Book Laughs

Label: One Records Release Date: 30/04/2007

TinPanAl by Alex Denney May 2nd, 2007

In a world of thirtysomething hucksters peddling fake angst for mass consumption, there’s much to be said for a band like The Xcerts. Because the Aberdeen three-piece overcome any misgivings about their derivative sound by carrying the unmistakeable whiff growing pains, honestly rendered.

Musically speaking, 'My Book Laughs' is a thundering student disco floor-filler that rings all kinds of late-nineties shaped bells. Specifically, it sounds like Idlewild, and Biffy Clyro. A lot. Seriously, this shit is giving me some freaky flashbacks here. Building in textbook schmindie fashion to a gratifyingly noisy chorus, I can picture it all: the bad dancing, the snakebite and black sloshing out of plastic cups, the calm-after-the-storm outro which leaves the indie boys looking bereft since there’s nothing for them to play air guitar along to...

Yep, this here’s the real deal – genre-bound, yes, but rarely are the motions gone through with this kind of vigour. And that’s worth raising a plastic cup to.
