The Jehu Explosion

So far/made me sick

Label:

matt by Matthew Willson July 30th, 2001

The Jehu Explosion seem determined to rock. After detailing his brave escape from the world of 80's cock-rock, "supersonic love muscle" guitarist Tom explains the Luton 3-piece's attempts to carve a niche for their raw animal sound in the rather stagnant and nu-metal-infested music scene of the Herts area.

How successful they've been remains to be seen. They've proved popular at recent gigs, but this two-track demo only appears to catch a glimpse of their live sound. At their best on 'Made me sick' their layered guitar riffs promise a brutal post-hardcore ambience, but 'So far' only narrowly escapes the impression of poorly recorded angst-metal. While their guitar sound is more Shellac than Slipknot, the vocals sometimes come across with the angst-for-the-sake-of-angst attitude of so many local bands that makes this reviewer want to run a mile.

Overall then, The Jehu Explosion do seem to have promise and if they work on the more original aspects of their sound and allow their hardcore attitude to break free from metaller tendencies they may succeed in matching their live reputation on record, and prove worthy of their claim to 'dare to stand up and say: "Fred Durst, Shut up!".

A band worth watching.
