Carlos Campos

Barrio Latino II

Label: Snapper Music

athomas by Andy (quirk) Thomas July 19th, 2001

As double cds of Latin American crossover music mixed by DJs called Carlos go this isn’t bad. What we have here is 30 tracks split between those to relax to and those to dance to. Convenient.

Barrio Latino is a bar in Paris apparently, where "good food, beautiful people, and sultry summer evenings" are the order of the day. But this isn’t traditional Latin American music of course, it’s a crossover hybrid . Effectively this means Carlos has taken traditional rhythms and slapped a great big 4/4 drum beat underneath so clubbers the world over can feel more cultured. It is therefore unsurprising to find that * Barrio Latino II * suffers from Ibiza syndrome, where the initially catchy hooks and rhythms soon dissolve into a marathon of similarity only matched by Dave Pearce Dance Anthems.

Still, as a shot in the arm against mundane same old same old mainstream pop, and perhaps as mildly more imaginative music to drink to in a trendy bar, it succeeds.
