Helen Love

Long Hot Summer

Label: Invicta Hi-Fi Release Date: 22/08/2005

If there's one record which never changes, it's the one by Helen Love, so this is going to come as no surprise to anyone who's heard their stupidly bouncy and cheap pop. 'Long Hot Summer' is indeed a great summer record containing umpteen band name-checks and plenty more references to things which make Helen Love play consistently happy, cheesy Casio-pop: 'The Undertones, Ramones, Gene Vincent, Buzzcocks, Jonathan Richman, hey ho let's go, Human League, ripped jeans, sunshine over Swansea Bay, signed Clash record sleeves...' Helen Love makes The Chalets sound like Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies, as far as musical sophistication is concerned.

The third track ‘Helen Love on 45' is a clever medley of the hits, should you not have the stomach for any of the albums, making this a great single (in two parts!) and a greatest hits package in the space of eight minutes. Genius.
