Breaks Co-Op

A Place For You

Label: Parlophone Release Date: 18/09/2006

16261
thommo by Thomas Blatchford September 21st, 2006

Breaks Co-Op, then. Let’s cut to the chase and get to the interesting, meaty down-low about these guys, shall we? Well firstly, some of them are from New Zealand and... that’s it. Sorry that I can’t be any more help.

Because as far as I can see (hear?) it, i.e. judging from their new single ‘a place for you’ (note unassuming, ‘earthy’ lack of the upper case, people!), there are barely any other distinguishing features about this lot worth latching onto. Unless, of course, you savour the sense of shock that occurs when a song ends three minutes in, even though you would have at least expected, as basic if predictable musical norms would rightfully demand, something Vaguely Interesting to have happened. Or that for some reason you actively enjoy hearing music so relentlessly beige that even after the fifth or sixth listen it’s easier to transcribe Autechre sheet music than to sing some of the melody that apparently happened somewhere in the middle of this audio-wallpaper. Or maybe, just maybe, you think Snow Patrol are a bit too edgy.

If so, you’re welcome to this. Please, take it. There’s some strumming. There’s a string section on auto-pilot. There’s a bloke singing like he’s trying to emulate Guy Garvey, only after having his testicles shrunk, his passion surgically removed and the rest of him shaved to please conventional aesthetics. That’s it - short of verve, of charm, of anything, the sort of froth that could make a cappuccino jealous. But it’s a love song, so it must be worthy of our time, right?

Now if you’ll excuse me, I think I left some paint drying somewhere.
